Les Misérables is a French epic historical novel by Victor Hugo, first published in 1862, about an ex-convict named Jean Valjean who is pursued by Inspector Javert while trying to live a new life. The story has been adapted into numerous films and a highly successful stage musical, exploring themes of social injustice, poverty, and redemption.
